First WAVES Knowledge Exchange Workshop on Ecosystem Accounting - Agenda and Presentations

Los Banos, the Philippines

February 23-27, 2015

Link to full story: First WAVES Global Knowledge Exchange on Ecosystems and their Valuation

Background

The large range of activity related to accounting for ecosystems has led to a wide range of interpretations or views of what constitutes ecosystem accounting. To consolidate understanding, fill several gaps which exist in the current global learning offers and accelerate the adoption of ecosystem accounting in developing countries, the Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) Global Partnership Program, in collaboration with other partners, organized the 1st Knowledge Exchange Workshop on Ecosystem Accounting.

The learning objectives of the WAVES Knowledge Exchange Workshop on Ecosystem Accounting are for the WAVES Core implementing countries:
  • To understand potential entry points to ecosystem accounting and how it can improve ecosystem management;
  • To become familiar with the basic concepts of environmental accounting and how they are applied to ecosystems;
  • To understand the links between ecology, economics, natural resource management, national (economic) accounts and ecosystem accounts;
  • To share lessons learned from the ecosystem accounting experience in the Philippines.

The program is based on a 360 Capacity Support (360CS) approach tested by the World Bank, which is designed to provide comprehensive capacity development assistance to developing countries. The approach intends to collaborate closely with the government counterparts and includes three distinct components: (i) capacity diagnostic to define and capture the clients’ goals and identify potential barriers; (ii) action learning to work with clients on complex and critical challenges through a problem solving process and develop an action and result-oriented roadmap to achieve the stated goals; and (iii) facilitation for results, which will assist the clients to connect their priorities to global knowledge, good practices and tested solutions and to build their long term capacity to achieve the goals as defined in the roadmap.

Building on these principles, this knowledge exchange event includes the 5 modules and each module is one day in length. The modules are:

Module 1: Ecosystem Accounting Essentials and Policy use of Accounts
Module 2: Getting started on ecosystem accounting
Module 3: What is happening on the ground: a field trip
Module 4: What worked: a Master Class on Ecosystem accounting in the Philippines
Module 5: How to conduct ecosystem accounting: clinics for practitioners

Each module has 4 sessions and each session is about 90 minutes. The target audience and learning objectives are specific to each module and the level or detail of training increases from introductory in module 1 to intermediate and advanced in models 2-5.
