National ecosystem assessments form an essential knowledge base for safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study analyzes eight European (sub-)national ecosystem assessments (Portugal, United Kingdom, Spain, Norway, Flanders, Netherlands, Finland, and Germany) and compares their objectives, political context, methods, and operationalization.
