The total damage and economic loss from forest fires in Indonesia this year amounted to at least $5.2 billion, equal to 0.5% of gross domestic product, the World Bank said in a report on Wednesday.
On Friday, July 26, 2019, the Indonesia Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (I-WAVES) held an event to mark the completion of its first phase, including launching of several reports consisting of program findings and analysis, developed in collaboration with Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), the Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS), and the Ministry of Finance.

WAVES has helpsed Indonesia implement a system that calculates the physical and monetary values of natural resources using an accounting system, or often referred to as Natural Capital Accounting, or NCA. Through NCA, natural resources can be mainstreamed into development policy and planning. This video captures the impact that accounting has had on policy-making in Indonesia.
