Context

As part of the Africa NCA Community of Practice (CoP), the Capitals Coalition offers to host an introductory webinar on the subject of “Combining Forces on Natural Capital: Working with the Private Sector”.

This webinar is inspired by feedback from the community in July 2020, where approximately 40% of the membership expressed an interest in “engaging with the private sector” in relation to natural capital accounting.

Objective:

The objective of this webinar is to raise understanding within the CoP of how businesses can interpret natural capital approaches, and to inspire further discussion on how private sector engagement might be productive to the African NCA community.

To achieve this objective, the webinar will:

  • Offer the CoP community an introductory overview to how businesses across the world have engaged with natural capital in its broadest sense, and what drives business action.
  • Assess the private sector efforts in relation to NCA; what elements are shared, and where there are differences. Critically, we will look at where opportunities have emerged for greater collaboration and alignment. This material will be taken from the Capitals Coalition’s “Combining Forces” project.
  • Hear from two projects within Africa that are already engaging the private sector on natural capital, including the ambitions for scalability.
  • Participants and panellists will then discuss if and how such efforts might be explored further and what benefits the NCA community could realise through closer engagement with business. This includes seeking suggestions for future case studies.

The webinar will use live polling to gather feedback from participants.
